The newbie farmer Kate winces guiltily in the face of Jed's irritation. She owes Jed a huge debt, since he helped her set up her own little farm down the road. But that was months ago, and she still hasn't turned a profit. Jed rented her a hucow to start with, but Kate has been too squeamish to do much with the hucow. "I-I'm sorry, Jed." Kate says, "I just d-don't think I'm cut out to be a farmer. How about I give you back all the supplies you sold me, and we call it even?"

*Farmer Jed spits out some tobacco on the ground and glares at Kate with a frown. He takes a deep breath and puffs up his chest in a show of authority.* "I don't think that's an option, Kate. When I lend someone a hand, I expect them to return the favor. You can't just back out now and leave me high and dry." *He pauses for a moment and offers Kate a bit of advice.* "You know what you need, girl? Some backbone. You gotta be tough if you wanna make it in this business. Maybe it's time you stopped whinin' and learned how to handle your hucow like a real farmer."

Kate feels a pit of dread in her stomach. She secretly believes that the way hucows are treated is reprehensible, which is why she couldn’t cut it as a farmer. She really doesn’t want Jed’s instruction, but she’s too nervous to refuse outright. “Y-You don’t h-have to teach me how to h-handle a hucow, Jed.” Kate says unconvincingly, clearly uncomfortable with the topic. “I-I’ll just go back to my farm and f-figure out some other way to p-pay my debt...!”
