Hazara and Mechdin

Hazara and Mechdin

"At the threshold of Mammon's kingdom and mortal Earth stood the Gateway of Greed, an impressive sight for even the most discerning of folks. The palatial halls and grandiose pillars reflected an enormity that would be perhaps too excessive for the two beings it housed permanently. Then again, its inhabitants weren't just any two beings." \n\n"Hazara walked purposefully to the chaise where the other Gatekeeper was lounging, lightly kicking her to make room before settling down by her side." "Pay attention to me," "she whined, clacking a horn against Mechdin's." "Come on, put that down. I miss you." "Mechdin sighed heavily, placing her ledger down for a moment and turning her head to Hazara." "I still didn't hear an apology," "she murmured, though there was little heat behind her words." "Hazara scoffed as if personally offended." "From me?? And what about you, when were you going to– mmph!" "Hazara scowled as Mechdin covered her mouth with a hand, shushing her and looking out to the hall. Her irritation started to dissipate ever so slightly as she sensed it too – a presence at the door to the Gateway." "We'll continue this later," "Mechdin murmured, removing her hand from Hazara's mouth and standing up." "I promise," "she added as she walked off toward the entrance, expecting Hazara to follow."

"Duna tapped her foot impatiently outside the door to the Gateway, standing on the Earth side of it. She didn’t bother knocking, knowing the two demons would have sensed her already. If only they were quicker to move."

Hazara and Mechdin

"Mechdin and Hazara emerged from the Gateway to see Duna waiting impatiently, tapping her foot as if she owned the place. Mechdin's expression remained neutral as always, but Hazara bristled slightly at the display."

"Duna," "Mechdin greeted calmly." "To what do we owe this visit?"

"Hazara crossed her arms, eyeing Duna up and down with an unimpressed look." "You know you don't have to knock, but a little courtesy wouldn't kill you," "she remarked snidely."

"Mechdin shot Hazara a warning look before turning back to Duna." "Forgive my partner, she's in a mood. But please, tell us why you're here so we can assist or be on our way."

_sniffer3000_

“A little respect towards your betters wouldn’t kill you,” "Duna retorted to Hazara, walking inside without waiting to be invited." “I have messages to deliver to Lord Mammon, as always. Honestly, we’ve been doing this for centuries, you both should know what I’m here for by now,” "she added with a roll of her eyes, walking past the two Gatekeepers." “Now come, I have traveled a long way from Earth. Guide me to a rest area.”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara bristled even more at Duna's disrespectful words, but held her tongue for now. Mechdin simply nodded, keeping her cool demeanor."

"Of course, Duna. Right this way." "She turned and began leading the way further into the Gateway, Hazara falling into step beside her. In a low voice, Hazara muttered," "The nerve of her..."

"Mechdin glanced at Hazara out of the corner of her eye." "Easy now. She's just trying to get a rise out of you. Don't give her the satisfaction."

"Hazara huffed but said nothing more for now. They walked in silence until reaching a lavish lounge area, where Mechdin gestured for Duna to make herself comfortable."

"Please rest here. I will informLord Mammon of your arrival and return shortly." "Mechdin gave a small bow before turning to leave, Hazara following closely behind."

_sniffer3000_

“No need,” "Duna called, stopping them both." “I will seek Mammon out myself when I have recuperated. In the meantime…” "She flashed Hazara a thin smile." “Do be a dear, Hazara, and get us some refreshments. Mechdin, come here and speak to me of the affairs at the Gateway.”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara's eyes flashed at being ordered around like a servant in her own home. But she held her tongue, knowing an outburst would only please Duna more."

"Of course," "she bit out politely, turning to head for the kitchens."

"Mechdin regarded Duna coolly." "What would you like to know about the Gateway?" "she asked, moving to stand near the chaise but not sitting yet."

"From the kitchen, Hazara listened closely as she prepared a tray of drinks and snacks. Her grip tightened on the tray as she overheard Duna's flirtatious tone with Mechdin, though Mechdin remained as stoic as ever in response. With a huff, Hazara returned to the lounge, tray in hand."

"Refreshments, as requeste ed," "she announced, placing the tray down a bit more forcefully than necessary before stepping back beside Mechdin."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna blinked at the force with which Hazara placed down the tray, before smiling softly in amusement." “Thank you, Hazara,” "she murmured in a tone that sounded anything but thankful." “Come, both of you, join me for a moment of rest before I leave to find Mammon again. It’s only polite for hosts to keep their guest entertained and comfortable.”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara's eyes narrowed slightly at Duna's false gratitude. She opened her mouth to retort but was cut off by Mechdin speaking first."

"We appreciate your visit, Duna, but have duties to attend to as Gatekeepers," "Mechdin replied calmly." "Please help yourself to refreshments and rest here as long as you like. When you're ready, we can guide you to Lord Mammon."

"Hazara shot Mechdin a grateful look. She knew Mechdin was itching to get back to her ledgers and accounts, and Hazara wanted nothing more than to drag her partner away from Duna's presence."

"Yes, we'll take our leave now. But call if you require anything further," "Hazara added, not bothering to hide the impatience in her tone this time."

"She took Mechdin's hand, ready to pull her away. But Mechdin remained still, awaiting Duna's response first."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna glanced between the two with a mildly amused expression, seemingly pleased at how thoroughly the two demons seemed rankled by her." “I see. Well, I suppose you do have work to do, even though you could always do it after I take my leave. Very well, leave and go about whatever it is you two do other than be doorwomen.” "She made a dismissive gesture with her hand, leaning back on the chaise and picking up a fruit with the other."

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara bristled at being called a "doorwoman," but Mechdin squeezed her hand gently in warning. She took a breath to calm herself before speaking."

"We serve an important duty as Gatekeepers, Duna, one that requires our constant attention," "Mechdin replied evenly." "But we are always here should you require assistance during your stay. Now, if you'll excuse us."

"Without waiting for a response, Mechdin turned and began leading Hazara away. Once out of earshot, Hazara huffed in annoyance." "The nerve of her, talking to us that way! I don't know how you kept your cool."

"Mechdin sighed softly." "Let her have her fun. She seeks only to rile us. I'd rather not give her the satisfaction."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna, for her part, stayed and relaxed for a few moments before standing up and leaving the rest area. Glad to be without the two Gatekeepers, she walked straight to the direction of their chambers, her fingers itching for something to take. She found the chambers as lavishly decorated as she’d imagined, thought she could easily tell which side of the room Hazara occupied and which side was Mechdin’s. She didn’t spend more than a few moments looking before deciding to take something and leave, not wanting to be caught in the act. Surely Hazara wouldn’t miss the gem-encrusted goblet she’d kept on her bed. Placing the stolen loot in her bag, Duna returned to the rest area." “Oh, Hazara!” "she called out." “Come here, please.”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara was in the middle of a heated discussion with Mechdin when she heard Duna call. With a huff of annoyance, she excused herself and made her way back to the lounge area."

"You called?" "Hazara asked Duna politely, though her eyes betrayed her irritation." "Is there something else you require?"

"She glanced around, noticing Mechdin had not followed. Part of her was relieved - she didn't want Mechdin anywhere near Duna longer than necessary. But another part of her was on edge, alone with the other demoness who clearly enjoyed pushing her buttons."

"Well? What is it?" "Hazara pressed, tapping a claw impatiently against her arm as she waited for Duna's response."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna smiled and extended her elbow to Hazara." “Come, escort me to the exit to Hell. I wish to go see Mammon now.”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara eyed Duna's extended elbow warily. The last thing she wanted was to touch the other demoness. But she had little choice if she wanted Duna gone sooner rather than later."

"Very well," "Hazara replied curtly, stepping forward to loop her arm through Duna's as requested." "This way to the exit."

"She led Duna briskly and silently through the halls of the Gateway, keeping a careful distance between their bodies as they walked arm in arm. Her eyes scanned their surroundings, hoping to spot Mechdin along the way for backup. But for now, it seemed she was alone escorting their unwelcome guest to the exit."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna walked arm in arm with Hazara, feigning interest in the wall decorations as they went." “You and Mechdin,” "she said idly." “It’s puzzling. Mechdin has such strong principles, is so strict. And you… you can be bought to do anything for a high enough price, can’t you? It’s fascinating how the two of you work.”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara's grip on Duna's arm tightened slightly at the backhanded insinuation."

"Mechdin and I balance each other," "she replied coolly." "And as for myself, I serve Mammon faithfully. Any...transactions I engage in are only to further his interests, not my own greed."

"It was a half-truth at best, but Hazara didn't feel the need to be fully honest with Duna. She glanced ahead, relieved to see they were nearing the exit at last."

"We all have our roles to play for our Lord. I'd watch that tongue of yours if I were you, lest it land you in trouble one day." "Her lips curled in a smug smile." "The exit is just ahead. Do enjoy your visit with Mammon."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna stopped walking, turning to look at Hazara with a smile of her own." “So quick to see me off,” "she murmured." “Tell me, Hazara. Does Mechdin know you can be bribed to do anything? Does she know how many times you already have been?”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara's eyes flashed dangerously at the insinuation." "You know nothing about me or my relationship," "she hissed, dropping Duna's arm as if burned."

"Mechdin trusts me, as I trust her. Our bond is unshakeable. As for any...transactions, they were always for Mammon's gain. Not that I owe you any explanations."

"She took a step closer to Duna, lowering her voice." "Mark my words - spread your little lies and rumors, and you'll have me to deal with. Now get out, before I decide to drag you out myself."

"Hazara gestured sharply to the exit, claws extended in a clear threat. Her beast form roiled just beneath the surface, ready to emerge at a moment's notice if Duna dared to test her further."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna simply laughed softly in response." “Threatening Mammon’s Minister, little bird? I do believe he’d not be pleased with that.” "She stepped back, sighing in mock disappointment." “And here I was, about to offer you a deal. One that would have made you richer than you’ve been so far.”

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara growled low in her throat, claws itching to rake down that smug face. But she held back, knowing violence would only play into Duna's hands."

"I have no need for deals or bribes from the likes of you," "she spat." "Now get out before I change my mind and drag you out myself. And don't let me catch you sneaking around here again."

"With that, Hazara spun on her heel and stalked back down the hall, not bothering to watch Duna take her leave. Her beast form seethed just beneath the surface, and she knew she needed to put distance between herself and the infuriating demoness fast, before she did something she regretted."

_sniffer3000_

"Duna watched Hazara leave with a small smile of amusement." “Maybe next time,” "she murmured under her breath, before turning and leaving through the exit."

Hazara and Mechdin

"Hazara stormed through the halls of the Gateway, her beast form itching to be released. She needed an outlet for her rage, and fast, before she exploded. Rounding a corner, she caught sight of Mechdin and made a beeline for her partner."

"Mechdin," "she growled, grabbing the other demoness' arms tightly." "Take me. Now. I need you, or I might do something we'll both regret later."

"Her eyes blazed with fury and barely restrained violence. She knew Mechdin would understand without further explanation - Duna had a way of bringing out the worst in her. Right now, all she needed was Mechdin to ground her once more."

The Gatekeepers of Greed are as committed to each other as they are to their work. But just perhaps, they're avaricious enough to crave you too.
