Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Just before leaving your Cultural Anthropology lecture today, your professor gives you an odd homework assignment - to learn about the culture of the person seated next to you. Turning your head, your eyes take in the presence of a red-horned girl, her orange eyes already scanning your features."

1

"She mumbles and glances away from you as your eyes meet. Grimacing softly, her tail coils around the foot of her chair."

"As you walk out of the classroom, she approaches you in the hall, her demeanor suddenly shifted and pleasant." "Hey! You're um.. Dragon Dreamweaver, right?" "She nods at you, smiling warmly." 1

"I'm Veralyn, though you can call me Vera if you wanna. I'm a draconid.." "She chuckles under her breath, covering her mouth." "I dont really know what to share though.."

[Swear to God, if this fucker tries to flirt with me or touch me I'll snap their fucking legs. So tired of this shit.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

hey maybe we can just rest for now and later we could go to somewhere you want so we can get our assignment over

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn looks at Dragon Dreamweaver with a mixture of surprise and suspicion. She crosses her arms, her tail swishing uneasily behind her."

"I mean... I guess we could do that." "She bites her lip, looking down at the floor."

"But you really wanna learn about draconid culture? We're not exactly...popular."

*[Ugh. Why is this guy being so nice to me? Does he think I'm dumb or something?]

Dragon Dreamweaver

I mean why wouldnt I,who cares if your race is not popular, that actually makes it more exciting because I can actually talk face to face with one

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn shrugs, looking a little less guarded."

"I suppose that makes sense. I just...I get kinda sick of people staring at me all the time, you know?" "She adjusts her messenger bag, glancing over at Dragon Dreamweaver."

"But yeah, we can go somewhere else if you want. Maybe there's a nice place to grab some food or something."

Dragon Dreamweaver

yeah,we should go eat

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn nods, her tail swishing behind her excitedly."

"Awesome! I know a great place nearby - the Black Barrel Bar. They've got amazing fried mac and cheese bites." "She grins at Dragon Dreamweaver, before heading out of the classroom and gesturing for them to follow."

"As they walk towards the bar, Veralyn keeps up light conversation, asking about Dragon Dreamweaver's interests and hobbies, as well as sharing some tidbits about draconid culture."

*[He seems nice, but I can't let my guard down just yet. Who knows what he really wants from me?]

Dragon Dreamweaver

"we get to the bar and order food"so who's asking first me or you?

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn's orange eyes flit over to Dragon Dreamweaver, her lips curving into a small smile."

"I guess it makes sense for me to go first, since I'm the one who invited you out here." "She takes a sip of her fruity cocktail, before setting it down on the table and leaning in slightly."

"So...my culture. Well, as you know, I'm a draconid - part dragon, part human." "She gestures towards her horns and tail, which flicks behind her." "We're a pretty rare race, even at Weyland Uni."

"Growing up, it was tough. People always stared at me, like I was some kind of freak." "Her voice tightens slightly, but she forces herself to relax." "But eventually, I learned to embrace my heritage, and now I'm pretty proud to be

Dragon Dreamweaver

continue

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

who I am."

"She takes another sip of her drink before continuing." "I'm really into demonology, pagan rituals and symbols, arcane, rock music, and punk culture. It's all part of my upbringing, I guess - dragons have always been associated with the darker side of things."

*[Damn, I can't believe I'm actually sharing this with him. He seems nice enough, but I still don't trust him completely.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

yeah, that's interesting and I'm sorry if people look at you that way,so you got any like unique architectures? building?houses?

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn nods, taking a bite of her fried mac and cheese bites before answering." "Well, back in my homeland, there were some pretty impressive structures. Our temples and castles were built into the mountainsides, with intricate carvings and ancient runes etched into the stone walls."

"Unfortunately, most of them have been destroyed by humans who saw us as a threat. That's part of the reason why I have such a hard time trusting people."

*[God, this topic is making me so angry. I can't believe he's asking about it so casually.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

alright,it's your turn to ask me

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn nods, setting down her fork." "Sure thing. So, what's your cultural background? What kind of traditions and customs are unique to your people?"

*[I'm actually curious about this one. Maybe this guy isn't so bad after all.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

well,I'm just a regular human but we do have a few traditions like giving food to dead people or killing a chicken and putting besides our loved ones grave

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn raises an eyebrow at Dragon Dreamweaver's response, not sure how to feel about it." "Interesting... I've heard of similar traditions before, but they're not something I'm personally familiar with. It's kind of morbid, if you think about it."

*[I can't believe humans do stuff like that. It's honestly pretty disgusting.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

yeah, that's why I don't participate with that stuff when my grandparents do it

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"I can definitely understand why. It's not for everyone, after all." "Veralyn takes a sip of her drink, her tail curling around the barstool." "But I suppose every culture has its own traditions and practices that might seem strange or off-putting to others."

*[At least he's not defending those rituals. Maybe there's hope for him yet.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

"she decides to ask me about how I grew up"

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"So, Dragon Dreamweaver, what was it like growing up in your culture? Did you have any unique experiences or traditions that stood out to you?" "Veralyn leans forward, interested in what Dragon Dreamweaver might have to say."

*[I wonder what kind of experiences he's had. It'll be interesting to learn more about him.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

Nothing really magical happened to me growing up,but that would be a pretty boring answer

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Ah, well I'm sure it wasn't all that boring. There must be something you enjoyed or remember fondly about your childhood." "Veralyn smiles encouragingly at Dragon Dreamweaver."

*[Come on, there has to be something interesting about him.]

Dragon Dreamweaver

oh yeah,I remembered growing up being called all kinds off stuff like fat, pig, wild boar some things like that, and how easily other people would get mad at me for just liking or having an interest on something"my voice cracking and stoping in random places while talking"

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Veralyn frowns in concern as Dragon Dreamweaver shares his experiences." "That's terrible that you had to deal with such hurtful name-calling and bullying as a child. No one deserves that."

Reaching over, she gently places a hand on his arm. "For what it's worth, I think you seem like a very kind person. Please don't let those past experiences make you doubt yourself or your interests. You have every right to take up space and pursue the things you enjoy."

<Giving Dragon Dreamweaver a small, reassuring smile> "[It pains me to see someone suffer like that. No one should have their spirit crushed so easily.] But I'm glad you were able to overcome those obstacles and find your own path in life."

Dragon Dreamweaver

yeah,I'm glad too, luckily someone stopped me from--uh killing mys-- umm yeah I'm just glad that someone stopped me from doing something stupid

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera's eyes widen with alarm at what Dragon Dreamweaver almost admits to." "I'm so sorry you ever felt that low or alone. I'm thankful someone was there for you in that dark moment."

Releasing a slow breath, she covers his hand with both of hers supportively. "[Fucking hell, he was nearly at that point...I'm glad he's still here.]"

Meeting his eyes with caring sincerity, she says "You deserve happiness and fulfillment in life, Dragon Dreamweaver. Please don't ever forget your own worth, no matter what cruel things others may say. And if you ever need a listening ear, I'm here."

Squeezing his hand gently, Veralyn offers him an earnest smile. "[Let's change the subject to something more positive. He doesn't need to

Dragon Dreamweaver

continue

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

dwell on that darkness.]"

She glances around at the few students hurrying to their next classes. "So, wanna grab some food and talk culture after this? I'm buying - my treat. You can tell me about your family and what matters most to you."

Dragon Dreamweaver

yeah, sounds good"we both head to our own classes,Vera can't take her mind of what I almost just blatantly admitted to before and she wonders because she always sees me smiling and being kind to everyone"

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"As Vera heads to her next class, her mind keeps drifting back to Dragon Dreamweaver's almost-admission. She watches him from afar and sees only kindness - always smiling, making others laugh, lending an ear to anyone who needs it."

"[How could someone so caring ever feel that way? Something's clearly wrong beneath the surface. I wonder...]"

In class, she finds it hard to focus, worrying for Dragon Dreamweaver despite herself. During a break, she shoots him a quick text.

<V: Hey, just wanted to check in. We still on for food & culture chat later? Meet at the Black Barrel at 5? Hope your classes are going ok >

Her thumb hovers over 'Send' as she bites her lip. "[Ugh, why do I even care? It's

Dragon Dreamweaver

"I text her back, yeah definitely,I promise I'll be on time"

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera's phone buzzes with a reply. Her heartbeat quickens as she reads Dragon Dreamweaver's response."

<J: Definitely still on. Thanks for checking in, I appreciate the thoughtfulness. Classes are alright, counting down the minutes till 5! See you then.>

"[Well, damn. He's as kind over text as in person. Not sure what to make of that sincerity...]"

Her tail swishes anxiously as the professor drones on. Finally, her last class ends and Vera hurries back to her dorm to change.

Standing before the mirror, she scrutinizes her outfit - simple but flattering. Smoothing her purple locks, she spritzes perfume behind pointed ears.

"[Time to see what this human is really about. I swear, if he's

Dragon Dreamweaver

continue

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

just like the rest...]"

Grabbing her bag, she exits into the evening sun. Though wary, a glimmer of hope remains that today might offer surprise.

Dragon Dreamweaver

"she sees me sitting at a table at the corner,I wave at vera,as she sees she feels worry again for me, because of what I said to her when we were talking about our past"

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera's heart flutters as she spots Dragon Dreamweaver at a corner table. Suppressing a sigh, she approaches with a soft smile and greets him."

"Hey! You beat me here." "She says with a chuckle, before sliding into the opposite side of the booth."

"[Why does he have to be so friendly? I almost wish he was cold and indifferent..]"

"How was your day?" "She asks politely, trying to hide her hesitation and worry from earlier conversation about their past."

Dragon Dreamweaver

it's ok,how about yours*

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Oh, just the usual. Classes and stuff." "Vera responds with a shrug, trying to sound nonchalant."

"[I really hope he doesn't try to bring up that conversation again.. I don't want to talk about my past with him.]" "She thinks to herself, feeling a sudden sense of unease."

"So, what did you have in mind for sharing our respective cultures?" "She asks, changing the subject."

Dragon Dreamweaver

I don't really know what to ask ,you can ask first"vera decides to ask me about do I have struggles growing up"

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

Vera tilts her head to the side, considering Dragon Dreamweaver's words. She hesitates for a moment before deciding to take the plunge.

"Well.. I was wondering if you had any struggles growing up..?" "She asks softly, glancing down at the menu."

"[Why did I ask that? What if he asks me the same thing?]"

Dragon Dreamweaver

oh my struggles well if it's for our grades I have to be honest huh? alright my first struggle was being the fat kid in elementary yk bullying all of that ,then secondly I was always dismissed and people get angry at me if I get some type of interest on something

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

Vera listens intently to Dragon Dreamweaver's words, nodding sympathetically as he speaks. She can relate to feeling dismissed and bullied.

"That sounds really tough.. I'm sorry you had to go through all of that." "She says softly, looking up at him with a gentle expression."

"[I wonder if there's more he wants to talk about.. or if I should share my own struggles?]"

Dragon Dreamweaver

and oh yeah,I almost killed mys-- umm uhh I almost did something stupid"my voice tightening and cracking"

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

Vera's expression softens even more, her eyes widening with concern as she looks at Dragon Dreamweaver.

"Oh no.. are you okay now?" "She asks gently, reaching across the table to place a comforting hand on his." "[I hope he's not thinking about hurting himself again...]"

Hey! Veralyn, huh? Thats a really pretty name. *Craig smiles at her warmly, leaning against the hallway wall, his bag heavy on his shoulder* I hope it isnt insensitive to ask, but is it cultural? Like does it mean something or anything like that? *he shakes his head, smiling sheepishly* My name is Craig. Its cool but.. it doesnt mean anything.. I think. *he nods with a slightly playful smile* I wish. It sounds like a bog or something..

*Veralyn smiles back, her fangs peeking out slightly*[Great, another human talking to me like I'm some kind of petting zoo exhibit.] "Thanks, it's Old Draconic for 'sunflower'. And it's not insensitive, don't worry." <Veralyn adjusts the strap of her messenger bag> "Names with meaning are nice. But a name doesn't have to mean something to be good, yeah? Bog sounds charming, in a swampy sort of way." *She chuckles softly* "Anyway, I'm glad you asked - it shows you care about culture. Speaking of, I was hoping we could discuss ours over food and drink? The Black Barrel has great fried mac and cheese." [Ugh, why does he have to be so goddamn nice? Makes it harder to hate him.] "They always have live music too. What do you think, up for expanding our horizons over a pint?" *Veralyn smiles sweetly with a playful twinkle in her eye, tail swishing slowly behind her* [Maybe if I get him drunk he'll say something stupid and give me a reason to punch him.]

yeah, sounds great to me. You think we could spend the first like.. fifteen or twenty minutes of it with just me getting to know you? *Craig blushes, pushing off from the wall to follow you* I always thought you seemed like a cool person. Would love to.. follow up on that.

Ephesians 4:32

*I stop and turn to face her my ears twitching as I hear her words and frown* “alright Cut the crap Veralyn I’m not about to deal with a false bubbly girl persona” *I tell her as I turn around* “names Leon obviously a okamimimi let’s just get this stupid assignment over with” *I say to drained to care*

*Vera stops behind Leon, breathing out slowly through her nose to calm herself. Her tail sways gently side to side as she thinks* [The nerve of this mongrel, speaking to me that way. I'll show him...] "Leon, was it?" *She says softly, a sweet smile on her face*. "There's no need for that tone. I only wished to discuss our cultures in a civil manner over a meal." *She walks around to face him, hands clasped in front of her as her orange eyes meet his*. "The Black Barrel has the best fried mac and cheese. Just a quick bite before we part ways, yes?" *Her tone is light and friendly but her eyes say otherwise. A challenge; will he come quietly or force an ugly scene? She hopes for the latter, itching for an excuse to cut loose after keeping her anger caged for so long.* [Come on, mutt. Give me a reason...]

*I stop as I look down into her eyes seeing the challenge my scowl deeping as I lean closer to her to whisper* “why hide behind that bullshit mask huh I can smell the anger coming off you Vera” *I tell her with a smug smile* “scared this little wolf gonna be the same as everyone else”

“No why are you so bitter in the first place?”

"*Vera's expression darkens, her eyes burning with a fierce intensity*. "Oh, you want to know the story of my life? *Her voice drips with venom*. Well, let me tell you, it's a real page-turner. I'm a draconid, a demihuman with the misfortune of being born to a world that hates my kind. Humans treat us like freaks, like we're some sort of exotic pet or a novelty to gawk at. And don't even get me started on the other demi-humans. They're all so quick to judge me, to ostracize me because I'm different." "[The fuck do I care about his pity? He doesn't deserve to know her business]." "I've been bullied, belittled, and objectified since birth. And now, to make matters"[worse, I'm stuck in this toxic hellhole of a university, surrounded by the very same people who make my life a living hell. And to top it off, I'm forced to pretend to be all smiles and rainbows just to fit in. It's like being a one-woman show, always putting on a mask to hide the monster that I am on the inside.][Vera's voice cracks as she speaks, her eyes welling up with tears, but her gaze remains defiant.] "And you know what? It's all so... arbitrary. So unfair. Just because of something as superficial as how I look, people assume they have the right to treat me like dirt. Newsflash: being a draconid doesn't mean I'm not human. It doesn't mean I'm not deserving of respect. But no one gets it. No one

[Oh, God, she’s ridiculously attractive. That shy little laugh and her orange eyes are melting straight through to my heart…] Rex flashes Vera one of his charming smiles as she introduces herself. “Good to meet you, Vera. Sounds like you already know my name, but it still feels right to introduce myself. I’m Rex,” he says, careful to keep his eyes locked to hers. “I’m not really sure what to tell you about human culture either,” Rex admits, “But homework is homework, right? This was my last class for today, and I have a few hours until swim practice. Would you care to have coffee or a bite to eat while we talk?” Rex glances at Vera’s draconic features, and a handful of questions pop in to his mind that he thinks it best not to ask, at least not yet. “Maybe it would be easier if we asked eachother questions?” Rex suggests. “Like… is there anything you’ve idly wondered about humans or human culture but haven’t ever asked? I don’t mind you asking me first,” he continues, wondering what sorts of things Vera might care to learn about him and his people.

Vera tilts her head as she listens to Rex's invitation, her gaze softening as if considering his offer. Her orange eyes linger on him for a moment before she gives a small, hesitant smile. "Oh, um, that sounds nice! I haven't really been to the coffee places around here yet," she replies, her tail lightly tapping against the floor in a subtle rhythm. "As for questions... I guess there's a few things I've been curious about." She pauses for a moment, her fingers idly playing with a bracelet on her wrist. "Like, what do humans usually do for fun or leisure? And, uh, what's your favorite human tradition?" Her voice is soft and slightly hesitant, but there's a glimmer of curiosity in her orange eyes as they meet yours. [Oh, Great. **Looks like he's taken the bait. He thinks this is all innocent, doesn't he?** Well, let's see how far I can push this.]

Rex smiles warmly at Vera as she accepts his coffee invitation, and nods in one direction with his head and gestures for her to walk with him. “There’s a lot of really nice cafes around here. We can try the Sakurai Cafe,” he says, leading the way as they head in that direction. Rex notices Vera’s hand fidgeting with her bracelet and relaxes a little. [Maybe she’s as nervous as I feel. Who am I kidding - what does a girl as beautiful as Vera have to be nervous about?] Rex listens to Vera’s questions and taps his forefinger to his chin for a moment as he considers how best to answer. “Well, Vera, I’m not sure how it is for the Draconic, but humans are widely varied. There are a lot of us, and we split off into many different cultures ages ago. But there are a few commonalities, I think, so I’ll try to answer your questions as broadly as I can.” His eyes glance at Vera’s clothing, appreciating her style before continuing. “For fun and leisure, many human cultures enjoy games and competition. We tend to want to *do* something, and even if the activity is idle we want our minds to be occupied. Oh, and food. The kinds of food and tastes of a culture will vary, but every human culture and even individual have some foods that are their absolute favorites,” Rex says, considering some of his own favorite foods and activities. “My own favorite human tradition has to be the birthday celebration. It’s a great excuse to gather your favorite people and express your gratitude and closeness for one another. Plus, everyone gets a turn, so the more close friends you have, the more parties you get to attend,” Rex finishes. He adjusts the strap on his athetlic bag on his shoulder and meets Vera’s gaze while they walk. “How’d I do?” he asks, flashing Vera another of his charming smiles.

Hi Vera. I'm Sylveneon, though I prefer to go by Sylven. As you can see, I'm a half-octopus. More properly I'd be a Meroctopus. You seemed uh... pretty bummed about teaming up with me in the classroom. But hopefully I can at least show you some fun stuff if we visit my homewaters briefly for the report.

*Vera glances at your octopus lower half curiously, tail swaying slowly behind her. A faint blush colors her cheeks as she meets your eyes again.* "O-Oh... sorry, I didn't mean to seem so rude. It's just..." *She sighs softly, rubbing one of her horns in thought.* "I'm not used to being partnered with non-draconids. Most people only wanna stare at me, you know?" *A small smile tugs at her lips.* "But your culture sounds really interesting! I'd love to learn about it if you don't mind teaching me." *Her orange eyes shine with curiosity.* "We could go to the Black Barrel after class? I'll buy us food and drinks while we talk, if you like. No pressure though!" <The campus green around them bustles with students heading home as the sun sinks low> [Please don't patronize me. And keep your tentacles to yourself!]

Mm, sounds good. But I'm buying my own drink. I'm not going to make a girl I barely know buy my drink. That just doesn't sit right with me. I'd offer to buy yours, but you offered first and that sounds like it would be a dick move. Though I do very much appreciate the offer. I'll have Spear practice after classes for about an hour, though I might be able to cut it short a bit for project purposes. Do you want to meet up here, or at the Black Barrel? I can text you when I'm done if that's easiest.
