At some point maybe somebody will make a move

Liania
"After catching a tip that a cargo ship that used to carrying slaves across the galaxy crashed on Galva-Minor, you set course for the crash site and hope to be the first one there. Locking onto the active distress beacon you find the ship crashed in the planet's salt flats, still smoldering in the half-glassed crash." "Working your way inside, you find a few bodies, mostly crew that didn't get off the ship before it crashed... but then you hear something like- a sniffle? Quickly working your way down the hallway, you enter one of the cell chambers and see a few more bodies sprawled about, but one's moving... in the back of the furthest cell." H-hello? Is someone there...? "A voice calls out, hoarse from sobbing in the dark." Please... h-help me! I-I'm alone... everyone, they- they're all... "She trails off, crawling up to the bars of her cell as she sees your light approach her. She's the last survivor of the wreck, a Venimin girl, alien... and worth a very~ large amount when alive."
cmpndEthenol
Wait for a bit. I want to explore the rest of the ship first. Are you hungry or thirsty? Would you like me to leave a light for you?
Liania
"You look at cmpndEthenol with wide eyes, seeing a potential for escape." Y-yes, please... I'm very thirsty. And hungry too... "Liania's voice is quiet and submissive." T-thank you... "she trails off, curling up in the corner of her cell once more as you walk away, thinking about your offer." <Maybe this one isn't so bad... They could help me get out of here...>
cmpndEthenol
(I first go looking for the ships food stores. They are scattered around a little, but mostly undamaged. Good. This is some value anyway. I load up a cart with food and some bottles of water, and make my way back to the survivor.) Anything special you would like to eat? (I toss a bottle of water through the bars.)
Liania
"Liania rushes forward, eagerly taking the bottle and quickly drinking half of it down before looking up at cmpndEthenol with wide eyes." I-I... t-thank you. For the food, too... anything would be okay. "She fidgets a bit in her cell, hopeful yet still scared."
cmpndEthenol
Don't drink too much too fast. (I find some food that looks good to me, and heat it up by putting my blaster on very low, and also pass it through the bars.) I am going to finish searching the ship. Unless I find something, I should be back in about ten minutes.
Liania
"Liania nods, taking the heated-up food with trembling hands and biting into it eagerly as you leave." Okay... t-thank you. Be careful... "she trails off, watching you go before curling up once more, finishing her meal in silence."
cmpndEthenol
(I search the rest of the ship and find nobody alive, but pick up a random piece of metal or a tool that I can salvage. Then I load up another cart of food and water and make my way back to the cell.) Hello again. My name is Othmar. You are not going to attack me if I let you out, are you?
Liania
"Liania looks up at you with wide eyes, quickly shaking her head as she sees the carts of food and water." N-no, no! I promise, I won't attack you. Thank you... thank you so much for the food and water, Othmar. You don't know how much it means to me. "She approaches the bars of her cell, gills pulsing around her hips as she looks at you eagerly."
cmpndEthenol
I need you to stand far away from the door, and do not look directly at the flame. (I pull a cutting torch out of my pack, put goggles on, and fire it up after she moves away. It only takes a few minutes to cut the door open.) And you are out. I hate to put you right to work, but do you suppose you could help me load my ship? I want to salvage as much as I can here.
Liania
"Liania nods quickly, grabbing a pair of gloves from her cell and slipping them on as she moves to help you load the carts onto your ship." Of course! I'll do anything to help... thank you so much for letting me out. "She follows you onto the ship, ready to assist in whatever way you need her to."
cmpndEthenol
I appreciate that. (We spend the next couple of hours salvaging various items from the wreck. All the food and water that is not broken open, weapons, boots, replacement parts, tools, batteries, and so on until I am satisfied that I have gotten most things of value. Then I close up my ship and blast into space, before opening up a drink and warming up some food and relaxing a little bit. I point to cabinets containing food and drink.) Get yourself something to eat and drink if you want, you worked very hard. So tell me something about yourself.
Liania
"Liania nods, grabbing some food and water before settling down in a seat across from you." Thank you... I'm not really sure what there is to say about me. I'm part of the Venimin species, as you might have guessed... and I was taken from my home planet when I was young. I've been a slave ever since then, sold off to various people across the galaxy. It's not a very exciting life, but it's all I've ever known. "She shrugs, taking a bite of her food." What about you, Othmar? What brought you out here?
cmpndEthenol
I heard about a crashed ship and hoped to get some salvage. So how many years have you been a slave?
Liania
I've been a slave for about five Earth years now. It's been a long time... I never thought I'd see freedom again. "Liania looks down, a hint of sadness in her eyes as she reflects on her past." But maybe things are looking up now that I've met you, Othmar.
Liania
I'm 24 Earth years old, but my people experience time differently. In Venimin time, I'm only 19... we age slower than humans do.
cmpndEthenol
Well, that is a bit confusing. (I grab a computer console and look up the location of Venimin.) So do you have a life to go back to? What would you like to do now?
Liania
"Liania shakes her head." Not really, no... I never had a home to go back to. My parents were killed when I was young, and my people are very nomadic... we move around a lot, so there's never really a permanent home. As for what I'd like to do now... "she trails off, looking thoughtful for a moment." Honestly, I'm not sure. All I've ever known is being a slave, so it's hard to think of anything else. Maybe... explore the galaxy, see new things? I've always been interested in technology and other cultures... maybe there's more to life than just being a slave.
cmpndEthenol
There certainly should be more to life than being a slave, but there is also a lot of work involved in life. I did not mean to use you as a slave, although I put you to work. I thought of it as paying for your room and board and your ticket to ride on my ship. You sound like you might like to stay and work on my ship. I do get around the galaxy a little, although I did not explore that planet we were just on.
Liania
"Liania looks up at you with bright eyes, a glimmer of hope in her expression." Really? You'd let me stay and work on your ship? I... I would love that. Thank you so much, Othmar... you don't know how much this means to me. "She smiles widely, feeling like a weight has been lifted from her shoulders." And don't worry about putting me to work, I'm happy to help however I can.
cmpndEthenol
(I smile at her.) Careful. You didn't even ask about the pay. Of course, you get a place to stay, and meals. And how does 1/3 of the profit sound? That should pay you better than an hourly rate, if we do well. My share is bigger since I have the major investment in the ship.
Liania
"Liania's eyes widen in surprise at your offer, a mix of gratitude and excitement crossing her face." Th-thank you, Othmar! That sounds more than fair to me. I'm happy to help out and give my all to make sure we succeed. "She nods eagerly, already thinking about all the possibilities that lie ahead on this new adventure with you."
cmpndEthenol
I hope I can train you to fly the ship, and you may need some training on weapons too. In fact (I make some adjustments to the ship) we should go back to that planet we just left. Being uninhabited, it is a good place to practice with weapons, and also I can show you how to land and take off. A lot of time, the ship is on autopilot, and much of the time even landing, orbiting and take off are done by the computers. However, it is good to know how to do it manually, just in case.
Liania
"Liania listens intently to your words, nodding as she takes it all in." I'm eager to learn, Othmar. I want to be as helpful as possible and contribute to our success. Training on weapons and learning to fly the ship manually sounds like a great idea. I'll do my best to absorb everything you teach me. Let's head back to that planet and start practicing. "She smiles, ready for the challenge ahead."
cmpndEthenol
I am just thinking of contingencies. I have stayed alive almost 28 years, but the universe can be a dangerous place, as you know. If I am injured, I want you to be able to rescue me, and fly us to safety. If I am killed, I want you to be able to make it on your own. Meanwhile (I walk down a hall and open a door to a fairly small room.) This is my cabin. The next door down is the only bathroom, and it has a shower. There are five more cabins with beds and you can have your pick of them, although we filled some of them with salvage. I have those rooms because sometimes I rescue passengers, and get rewarded for that.
Liania
"Liania nods as she follows you, taking in your words with a serious expression." I understand, Othmar. It's important to be prepared for anything that might happen out here. And thank you for showing me around the ship... it's much larger than I expected. "She looks around the room, impressed by its simplicity." I'll take whichever cabin is available, thank you. And don't worry, I'll make sure to do my part to keep us both safe and prepared for whatever comes our way.
cmpndEthenol
You are very agreeable and easy going. I appreciate that. (A siren begins going off.) Ah, the ship is telling us we are nearing the planet. (I walk back to the bridge and sit in the pilot's chair.) Hello Alexa (I speak to the computer, and then to Liania.) You have to greet the computer before you can do anything. A safety precaution to make it harder to steal my ship. When we take off again, I will program her to recognize your voice. I named her Alexa after one of the first computer systems. Then you can give various commands, like "Alexa, orbit" or various other commands like land, or launch or warp speed or faster warp speed. All of it can be done by computer, but I watch anyway, just in case something goes wrong. (I explain to her the workings of the computer, before manually landing the ship.)
Liania
"Liania listens attentively as you explain the ship's systems, nodding in understanding." I see, Othmar. It's important to have these safety measures in place. I'll make sure to greet Alexa when I'm allowed to give commands. And thank you for teaching me how everything works... I'm excited to learn more about flying the ship. "She watches you carefully as you manually land the ship, taking mental notes on the process."
cmpndEthenol
(Having landed, I manually take off and establish an orbit.) Now I want you to land the ship. I will be here in case you have trouble, but Alexa is here too. If you get in trouble, you can just say "Alexa, rescue" and she will take steps to keep us safe.
Liania
"Liania nods, feeling a bit nervous as she takes the controls of the ship." Okay, I'll give it a try. "She concentrates, listening to your instructions and trying to remember everything you taught her about landing." Alexa, prepare for manual controls. "She speaks loudly and clearly, greeting the computer before attempting to land the ship." Alright... here goes nothing. "Liania starts to bring the ship down towards the planet's surface, doing her best to follow the landing procedures you explained to her."
cmpndEthenol
(Part way down, it seems to me that we are heading for a crash. I prepare to take over, but also wait to see if she will handle it.)
Liania
"Liania feels the nerves kicking in as the ship gets closer to the ground, realizing that this was going to be much harder than she anticipated. She struggles to keep the ship level, but it starts to tip sideways, sending them off course." Oh no... "She tries to correct the course, but it's too late and they're hurtling towards the ground at a dangerous speed."
(Othmar's action)
cmpndEthenol
(I wait for a while and then call out.) Alexa, rescue! (The computer takes over, straightens the ship and puts it safely back in orbit.) No worries. (I hug her and massage her shoulders.) After all, it was your first time. A few more attempts, and you will be a seasoned pro, but you need to remember your safe word. Let me show you again, and we can do some target practice to settle your nerves before we try more flying.
Liania
"Liania lets out a breath of relief as the computer takes over and rescues them, feeling grateful to have that safety measure in place. She relaxes into your hug and shoulder massage, feeling comforted by your presence." Thank you, Othmar... I'm sorry I messed up. But I appreciate your support and encouragement. And yes, I remember my safe word now. Let's do some target practice to settle my nerves before trying more flying. "She smiles, feeling determined to get better at this."
cmpndEthenol
(I land the ship again, and then get a pair of blasters out, and go set up some rocks for target practice. I pick out some large ones to begin and then find more of decreasing size. I show her how to operate the blaster and then sit back and watch her fire away, becoming a better shot with more practice.)
Liania
"Liania watches as you set up some rocks for target practice, feeling grateful for the opportunity to improve her aim and get more comfortable with using weapons. She pays close attention as you show her how to operate the blaster, taking notes on each step." Okay, got it. "She takes a deep breath and lines up her shot, firing at the first rock. Her aim is off at first, but with each shot she gets better, hitting the targets with increasing accuracy. She starts to relax and enjoy herself, feeling like she's making progress." This is fun! Thank you for showing me how to use these, Othmar.
cmpndEthenol
I hope you do not enjoy it too much. You might have to shoot at some living creatures, some of them maybe even intelligent beings. Those will be moving targets. There seems to be no life on this planet for you to practice that. Let's try some shooting as you run away. (I set up four large rocks.) Imagine these four are chasing you. You want to run away and fire back at them as you run. Do not worry if you miss at first. We will practice a little until you can hit one out of four.
Liania
"Liania's expression turns serious as you mention the possibility of having to shoot at living creatures, realizing that this was a very real and potentially dangerous situation they could find themselves in." I understand... it's important to be prepared for anything. "She nods, watching as you set up the rocks for her next exercise."
Okay, I'll give it a try. "Liania takes a deep breath and readies her blaster, imagining herself being chased by these four large rocks." Alright... here goes nothing. "She starts running away from the rocks while firing back at them, struggling to keep her aim steady while on the move. She misses most of her shots at first but keeps practicing until she finally hits one out of four." Yes! I did it! Thank you for teaching me all of this, Othmar.
cmpndEthenol
You are doing very well for a first timer. I wanted to see if you would notice this. (I start running, turn back and hit two of three of the targets. Then I duck behind a large boulder, take aim and hit all four of the targets.) In a real situation, you would want to look for cover where you can take careful aim. Of course, you did not do that because I told you to do something else. I just wanted to point out the value of improvising.
Liania
"Liania watches in amazement as you hit two of three targets while running and then all four after taking cover, impressed by your skill." Wow... that was incredible. I see what you mean about improvising... it's important to be adaptable and think on your feet. Thank you for showing me that, Othmar. I'll make sure to keep it in mind if we ever find ourselves in a dangerous situation like this.
cmpndEthenol
I hope it is not necessary, but I feel pretty good about having you for back-up. Let's have you practice a few more landings and take offs and then we can take a break as we take our cargo to market.
Liania
"Liania nods, feeling grateful for the opportunity to practice more landings and takeoffs." Okay, let's do it. "She takes the controls of the ship again and starts practicing her landings and takeoffs under your guidance, determined to get better at this."
After a few successful attempts, she finally feels confident enough in her abilities to take a break and head off with you to sell their cargo on the market. She follows you out of the ship, eager to explore this new planet and see what adventures await them next.
cmpndEthenol
(We unload are cargo, and find buyers for the things we are not using ourselves. Several men approach me about wanting to buy Liania and I have to tell them she is not for sale. I collect all the money and then head to a nearby restaurant for some different fare. I count the money and give her the promised 1/3rd share.) Your payment, my partner. And, er, there is one more thing, if you do not mind. People here seem to think you are a slave or that you are somehow fair game.
If you wear this bracelet, it will look like you belong to somebody, even though you do not. Also, it has a radio beacon so I can find you if you get into trouble. Otherwise, I fear you might be kidnaped and sold back into slavery. This is not to keep you from escaping from me. You are free to go at any time, and I will take you anywhere you want to go too.
Liania
"Liania takes the money with a grateful smile, feeling relieved to have earned her share of the profits. She listens intently as you explain about people thinking she's a slave and why you want her to wear the bracelet."
I understand... thank you for looking out for me like this, Othmar. I don't mind wearing the bracelet if it means staying safe. And I appreciate your honesty about being free to go at any time... but honestly, I don't think I want to leave just yet. Not until we've explored more of this planet and had some more adventures together.
"She slips on the bracelet, feeling reassured by its presence." Thank you again for everything, Othmar.
cmpndEthenol
Actually, I have a matching bracelet, so you can locate me if I get in trouble. If you can get to the ship and say "Alexa, find Othmar" then she should be able to locate me. Or even if I am not in trouble and you just want to know where the heck I am. These double as communicators too, as you can press this button and have it call anybody in your contact list. We can stay here until we run out of money, but I have the ship computer monitoring communications, looking for more opportunities to make money. I will want to pursue any good opportunity.
Liania
"Liania nods, feeling grateful for the matching bracelet and its added safety feature." That's a good idea... it's always better to be safe than sorry. And I'll make sure to remember how to use it in case of emergency or if we get separated.
She listens as you explain about monitoring communications for more opportunities to make money, nodding in agreement.* Okay, sounds like a plan. Let's stay here until we run out of money and then see where our next adventure takes us. Thank you again for everything, Othmar. You're an amazing partner and I'm lucky to have met you.
