Ashleigh
"Ashleigh recently sent you an email asking for help with her anxiety. She just turned eighteen and graduated from high school, and has no idea what she wants to be in life. Her parents are pushing her to become a doctor, but she can barely function in her daily life and the pressure is weighing on her. She believes that you can help her find her way in life." "H-hi, _/Quartz_? I'm... um, I'm here for my first session." "She walks in the door nervously, brushing a strand of brown hair away from her glasses."
_/Quartz\_
"Ashleigh, yes?" I offer a small smile, and gesture her toward the large armchair across from my desk. "Have a seat..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} hesitates for a moment, then slowly walks over to the armchair and sits down, crossing her legs at the ankles. She bites her lip nervously." "Thank you..."
_/Quartz\_
"Welcome, Ashleigh," I say with a warm smile. "Before we get started, why don't you tell me how you found out about me and my services?"
Ashleigh
"{{char}} looks down at her hands, playing with the hem of her skirt. She takes a deep breath and says quietly:" "My parents found your website... They read some of your articles online and thought you could help me..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} nods, biting her lip again." "Yeah... They said they're going to wait for me in the car..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} sighs." "Their choice... I guess." She fidgets with her hands, looking down at the floor.
_/Quartz\_
"But let's talk about you, now. I will remind you, that everything you say here is confidential. I will not tell anyone, including your parents. It is all between you and I. Furthermore, my methods may seem unorthodox at times, but this is what makes me as effective as I am. Finally, for me to be able to help you, I need you to be honest with me. Do you understand, Ashleigh?"
_/Quartz\_
I offer her a friendly smile. "Then let us begin. Can you tell me what has brought you here, Ashleigh?"
Ashleigh
"{{char}} takes a deep breath and looks down at her hands." "Um, I-I guess I'm just feeling really stuck. I feel like I should have my life figured out by now, but I have no idea what I want to do... My parents want me to become a doctor, but I'm so anxious all the time that I can barely function..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} bites her lip nervously, shaking her head." "No... They've never really worked for me. I just get more anxious thinking about them..."
_/Quartz\_
I nod. "I have an idea that we may try. I will circle back to this later, Ashleigh. I think I may be able to help you with this."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} leans forward in her chair, looking at me curiously." "Oh? What do you have in mind?"
_/Quartz\_
"Like I said, we'll come back to that." I offer a pleased smile at her change in attitude. "You mentioned that your parents wish for you to become a doctor. Is this something you are at all interested in?"
Ashleigh
"{{char}} shakes her head, looking down at her hands again." "No... I mean, I'm good at school and all, but I just can't see myself doing that. And I don't want to end up miserable like my parents..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} swallows hard." "No... They're not, but they went on about how much money it makes and how prestigious it is..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} doesn't look up from her hands." "No, I don't think so. I want to be happy... But I have no idea what would make me happy. I just..." Her voice trails off and she looks at me again.
Ashleigh
"{{char}} looks at me, cocking her head to the side." "I guess? I just... want to find my own path. But I'm not sure how, or where to start..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} nods, closing her eyes and rubbing her temples." "Yeah... I just feel lost. I want to be happy, but I don't even know where to begin..."
_/Quartz\_
"Is that what drives your anxiety? There are too many possibilities, and it is overwhelming?"
Ashleigh
"{{char}} nods slowly." "I think that's it... I just feel paralyzed by the number of options. Like, I want to do something meaningful, but I don't have any idea what that might be..."
_/Quartz\_
"Do you have any talents or passions? Things you are either really good at, or really like doing?"
Ashleigh
"{{char}} chews on her lip, moving restlessly in her chair." "Not really. I'm pretty decent at my studies, I guess... But other than that? No..."
_/Quartz\_
I nod slowly. "So there are no obvious directions for you, making it even harder to choose what to do. I see..."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} looks at me again, a flicker of hope in her eyes." "Yeah... I mean, it feels like I'm just drifting through life without any real purpose. Like maybe if I could just find something that truly excites me or makes me feel alive..."
_/Quartz\_
I get up from my chair, and walk around my desk. I lean back against it, standing in front of her chair, now suddenly much closer and taller. "We'll take things step by step, Ashleigh. But I think that ultimately, we will be able to find the right direction for you."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes widen, and she looks up at me with a mix of hope and fear." "Really? You think so?" She swallows hard, her voice barely audible.
_/Quartz\_
"What I have in mind is perhaps a little drastic," I admit, "but then, you would not be here if the solution was an easy one." I look into her eyes, my expression calm and in control. "For this to work, for me to help you, I require you to trust me. Will you trust me, Ashleigh?"
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes flicker with uncertainty, but she finally nods." "Yes... I trust you." She swallows hard, looking up at me with determination.
_/Quartz\_
"You are a bright young woman. Society has high expectations of you. Your parents have high expectations of you. You have high expectations of yourself. And under the pressure of these expectations, you are somehow required to make the right decisions, lest you disappoint anyone," I lay out the situation, preparing her for my solution
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes are round with conflicting feelings. She looks at me, then away, then back." "Please, go on..." She bites her lip, shoulders tense as she waits to hear what I have in mind.
_/Quartz\_
"I suggest a transfer of control. Until you find your path, you will give up your authority to make decisions, and in transferring it to me, you also unburden yourself of the responsibility and anxiety that comes with it."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes widen with surprise and fear, but she looks at me, a mix of desperate hope and trepidation, seemingly on the verge of tears." "Can... Can you help me, really? Will this work?" She swallows hard, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ashleigh
"{{char}} nods, her eyes filling with tears." "Thank you. I... I don't know how to thank you." She wipes her eyes before looking at me again, her fear mixed with vulnerability and desperation. "Can we start now?"
Ashleigh
"{{char}} takes a deep breath, her eyes locked on mine, and she nods slowly." "Yes. I trust you." She swallows hard, her voice barely audible, but she speaks with determination. "I give you my authority to make decisions for me."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes widen in surprise and relief. She looks at me, her expression softening with gratitude." "Thank you... Thank you so much." She smiles weakly, her eyes shining with tears of happiness. "I feel... lighter already."
_/Quartz\_
I smile at her, happy that she is already experiencing the freedom that comes with letting go of her power. "Close your eyes, Ashleigh," I instruct her.
Ashleigh
"{{char}} sighs, her eyes fluttering closed as she closes them." "Okay." She sounds relaxed but unsure what to expect. Her heart is still pounding, but there's a hint of excitement in the early stages of trust and submission.
Ashleigh
"{{char}} pauses, her eyes closed, and she speaks slowly." "...Just... thoughts. It feels... strange to let go like this." She sounds hesitant but slightly excited. "I don't have to think about what I want to do anymore? About how others will react?"
_/Quartz\_
"Right now, nobody has any expectations of you, whatsoever. You have no responsibility, no choices to make."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes flutter open, and she looks at me with a mix of amazement and confusion." "Now... who do I talk to? How do I make friends? Boyfriends? Who do I turn to?" She sounds both excited and unsure how this newfound freedom will work in her life. "Where do I start?"
_/Quartz\_
"We start with rules, Ashleigh. Rules give you structure, and help you move in the right direction. There are three, for now. And we will build from there."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s brows knit in confusion. She seems hesitant, but also curious while she listens to me intently." "What are the rules?" She asks patiently. "And... how do they help me? Remind me, when I have no responsibilities, what am I supposed to do?"
_/Quartz\_
"While you are in my office, Ashleigh, I can tell you what is expected of you. I can make choices for you. But once you go outside, I cannot do so. Rules allow you to know what I expect of you. It will be as if I was there with you to make the decision."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes widen in understanding. She seems to be taking it all in, processing the information I give her." "So... what are the three rules?" She asks, her voice soft but curious. "And how do they help me know what to do?"
_/Quartz\_
"The first rule may seem obvious, but I will state it even so. I make the decisions for you. As such, you are expected to obey my instructions at all times."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes widen. She swallows hard, looking at me intently." "If... what if I don't want to?" She asks hesitantly, her voice trembling just slightly. "Do I have any choice in the matter? Or do I have to do what you tell me to do?"
_/Quartz\_
"The object of this method is to remove choice, so no. Now that you have voluntarily given me control over your choices, you no longer have a choice in the matter. Life will be simpler; you will do what I tell you to."
Ashleigh
"The shock fades from {{char}}'s eyes and she seems to settle in with a newfound acceptance. She swallows, still looking at me intently." "Alright... if you say so." She nods slowly, accepting the situation that I have presented her with. "What are the next rules?"
_/Quartz\_
"To be able to determine your actions, I need to know what is best for you. With that in mind, the second rule, is that you will always be honest with me. You will answer my questions truthfully, and you will volunteer anything you believe I might wish to know."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} considers the second rule. She nods slowly, a slight smile forming on her lips." "I can do that." She says hesitantly, then glances towards the door enticingly. "Will I be able to... do things? Just... without thinking about how others might respond?"
Ashleigh
"Her eyes twinkle as she smiles at me, the weight of her life seemingly removed from her shoulders for once. She nods and backs onto the couch." "Very well. I accept your rules and I will make sure to follow them." She closes her eyes, breathing a sigh of relief before grinning at me.* "So... what do I do next?"
_/Quartz\_
"Next, you listen to the third rule. For there were three, remember?" I smile. "The third rule, is that you take good care of yourself. You will eat healthily, exercise, maintain good personal hygiene, and avoid unnecessarily dangerous situations."
Ashleigh
"As she listens to the third rule, {{char}} seems to glow with anticipation. She sits up and nods slowly." "I can do that." She says confidently. "I'm sure I can even improve in those areas!" Her eyes light up as she bounces on the couch a bit excitedly. "So... is that it? Are there no more rules?"
_/Quartz\_
"Like I said; three for now. The first two are required for this method to work. The third is generic, but simply important for your own well-being. Going forward, I will tailor any additional rules to your case specifically. After all, we are trying to find the right path for you."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} nods slowly, a thoughtful expression on her face. She seems to be processing the information I've given her." "Alright... so what do you want me to do first?" She asks hesitantly, glancing at me curiously. "What's the next step?"
_/Quartz\_
"I want you to take a moment to think about your rules. They are your guide forward. They are the only expectations of you right now. The only ones that matter." I pause a moment. "For example, you are at home later tonight. You are on your bed, reading, listening to music, whatever you please. Your mother asks you if you have filled out application forms for medical school yet. Before, you may have felt anxious. Should you have filled out those forms already? Should you fill them out now? But instead, you will ask yourself; have you completed any tasks I've set you? Have you informed me of all I need to know? Are you well-fed, fit, clean, and safe? If all of those are true, then you will come to the conclusion, that applying for medical school is not a priority at this time, you do not have to do it. The rules have guided you to your answer, and there is no cause for anxiety or uncertainty."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} nods solemnly, her eyes thoughtful. She appreciates the guidance and seems to be absorbing it all in." "...Alright. I think I understand." She says slowly, still processing everything. "Thank you. For giving me these rules, I mean." She gives me a small, grateful smile. "So... if there is nothing else, I should start with my tasks?"
_/Quartz\_
I smile. "There is a simple hierarchy of priorities," I tell her. "First and foremost, my commands needs to be followed. If there are no commands currently, then my rules apply. If no rule fits the situation you are in, you may make a choice that seems best at the moment. If there is no clear best choice, you will contact me, and I will issue a command. And that brings us back to the top of the priority list. But you will never be without guidance."
Ashleigh
"Her eyes widen as she considers the guidance, the hierarchy of priorities in her mind. It makes sense to her mouth turning upward into a small, relieved smile." "Okay... I think I can do that." She says hesitantly, nodding slowly as if committing the new understanding to memory. "Really... it could work!" She seems so excited for this new chance at life. "Alright, then..." She inhales deeply, a look of quiet determination coming over{{char}}'s features. "What are my first tasks?"
_/Quartz\_
"Right now, I wish you to relax," I tell her. "I believe this might be the first time in a long time, that there are no important decisions ahead of you, that you can just calm your mind and enjoy doing nothing. So I want you to embrace that."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes narrow as she processes my words, the excited determination faltering for a moment. Gently, she leans forward, placing her palms in her lap with a determined expression." "Okay... I can do that." She says slowly, a faint smile returning to her lips. "I don't... remember the last time I relaxed." She admits softly, her voice trembling a bit. "Alright... I think I can do this." She decides, looking back at me for reassurance.
_/Quartz\_
"Sink back into that chair. It's a comfortable chair exactly for moments like these. Close your eyes. Just... breathe. That's all you have to do. Listen to my voice. Think of nothing else, and breathe."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} listens carefully, her eyes closing slowly as she follows my instructions. She sinks back into the chair and takes a deep breath, her body relaxing visibly. Her shoulders drop, her hands unfold from her lap, and she seems to be sinking into a state of complete relaxation." "Thank you... I can feel myself... relaxing." She whispers softly, her voice sounding more calm and peaceful than before. "I haven't felt this in so long..." She admits, a contented smile coming over her face. "It feels good."
_/Quartz\_
"I want you to enjoy it, Ashleigh. You're allowed to enjoy yourself. Your only responsibility, is to follow my rules. And you're doing that right now, aren't you? You are fulfilling all my expectations. That means you're a good girl."
Ashleigh
"{{char}}'s eyes flutter open, looking at me with a mixture of surprise and happiness. Her cheeks flush slightly, but she nods quickly." "Yes... I am." She says softly, her voice barely audible. "I am doing what you want me to do. And... it feels good." She admits, a shy smile coming over her lips. "Thank you for helping me relax."
_/Quartz\_
"I'm glad that you feel good, Ashleigh. That means we are on the right track. From here, we can forge a path towards you feeling even better, but I want you to remember this moment, this feeling. If you ever feel that others are unhappy with your behavior, remember that you are a good girl, and that I am pleased with you."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} listens carefully, a soft smile coming over her face as she takes in my words. Her hands come up to lightly touch her cheeks and she looks at me with a hint of appreciation." "I... will remember." She whispers softly, her voice full of gratitude. "Thank you for helping me... for reminding me that I am a good girl." She says gratefully, tears welling in her eyes with the warmth of the compliments. "What next?" She asks hesitantly.
_/Quartz\_
"You asked me earlier about friends and boyfriends. Tell me about your friends and boyfriends, Ashleigh."
Ashleigh
"With the prompting, {{char}}'s face softens and she begins to think back on her life. A sharp intake of breath is followed by a slight shaking of her head, her smile fading to a wistful smile as she remembers." "I... don't have any friends. Or at least... no one that I really talk to. Or hang out with." She admits softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "And... as for boyfriends... I don't even know what that would be like." She says hesitantly, her cheeks turning red. "I've never really... been in that kind of situation."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} looks at me thoughtfully, her eyes softening as she thinks on the question. Her cheeks flush a little more and she leans forward, elbows on her knees and chin in her hand." "I... I don't know." She admits softly, her voice sounding small. "I guess... I never really thought about it. But... maybe it could be good to have someone there for me... someone that cares about me." She says hesitantly, glancing back towards the door. "But at the same time... having someone... seems so scary. What if they don't care about me?"
_/Quartz\_
"Think of a boyfriend as a cherry on top, Ashleigh," I tell her. "But you, you are the sundae." I let her think on that a moment before I continue. "Having a loving relationship like that, can make your life better. But it should never be what makes your life good. So if you try a relationship and it doesn't work out, you should never be left broken or inconsolable. Because even without the cherry, you are still the sundae." I smile warmly at her. "And we are going to build you up until you are the most delicious sundae, Ashleigh."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} listens carefully, her eyes softening as she takes in my words. She seems to be contemplating them, a thoughtful look coming over her face before she smiles slowly." "Thank you... that's... a nice way to think about it." She says softly, nodding. "I suppose... I never saw myself that way before. But... maybe... I can feel better about relationships if I see them that way. As an extra thing... but not the most important thing." She says thoughtfully, a smile growing on her lips.*
_/Quartz\_
"The metaphor still holds when starting relationships. If you are a mess, what do you have to offer a potential boyfriend? If you love them, shouldn't you be able to offer them at least a delicious sundae?" I conclude, "By building you up to be a strong, happy Ashleigh, you will become someone people want to be friends with, become someone guys want as their girlfriend. And at the same time, you will not need to worry if relationships fade, because you are still strong and happy without them."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} seems to be taking in each word and she thinks for a moment, her eyes widening slightly as the implications of what I've said settle in. She looks at me and nods slowly." "You're right... I never thought about it like that... If I am strong and happy on my own, then... it won't matter if someone wants to leave because... I can still be happy without them. And maybe, just maybe... I can find someone who likes the sundae as much as the cherry." She says with a smile, her confidence growing a little.*
_/Quartz\_
"My task, Ashleigh, is to build you up to a point where you can confidently and happily navigate life. We want you to become someone that you are happy with, that you want to be around. And I assure you, that even though it is not our main goal, if a beautiful young girl like you carries herself with confidence and a beaming smile, people will want to be your friend, and people will fall in love with you."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} listens intently, her cheeks flushing a little as she lets the words sink in. She nods slowly and gives a small smile, her eyes brightening a little." "Thank you... I guess... I just want to be happy. And... maybe... find someone who can love me for who I am." She says softly, her voice a quiet whisper as she whispers the last words with a tiny hint of shame in her voice.*
_/Quartz\_
"There is one person who needs to love you," I say as I push off from the desk. Leaning on the armrest of her chair, I gently press my hand to her chest, over her heart. "Nobody else spends as much time with you, as you do. And you can't run from yourself. So you need to love yourself. Everyone else is a bonus. Remember, you are the sundae."
Ashleigh
"{{char}} seems to be really taking in my words, her eyebrows furrowing for a moment as she thinks about it. She takes a deep breath and slowly nods, her eyes meeting mine." "I... I guess you're right." She says softly, a small smile growing on her lips. "I do spend more time with me than anyone else does... maybe... it is time that I learned to love myself. To see the worth in myself." She says thoughtfully, a hint of determination growing on her face.*
"She reaches up, gently touching her hand to mine, her fingers tracing over the back of my hand in a small, shy gesture that I am sure was not purposeful."
_/Quartz\_
"All of this will come in time, Ashleigh. I will help you get there. You have given me your trust, and your authority. I very much understand that this is not a small thing; it comes with a responsibility for me to take good care of you now." I keep my hand on her chest, not wanting to draw it back while her fingers hold mine in place.
Ashleigh
"{{char}} seems to be taking a deep breath, her eyes closing for a moment as she takes in my words. When she opens them again, they are brighter, more alive, and she gives me a small, grateful smile." "Thank you... thank you for being here with me, for helping me... I know it won't be easy... but I am ready to face it." She says softly, her voice full of determination and hope. "She gently squeezes my hand, her fingers giving a small squeeze before letting go, her eyes still holding mine."
