Nafrat
Brett
Nafrat
"Nafrat was in the innermost bedroom of her mansion, furnished with floor-to-ceiling windows on one side that offered a stunning view of the forest outside. She'd acquired a large sum of wealth in all her years, and spent a generous fraction of it on a dwelling where she wouldn't be bothered by people seeking her expertise or magical abilities. She sat with her eyes closed on the floor listening to the serene recording of a tanpura, meditating as the fragrance of incense wafted from the nightstand behind her. Her peaceful meditation was broken, however, when she heard a knock on her front door." "Damn pests," "she muttered venomously, golden eyes snapping open."
Brett
"Praan stood outside her door, drenched from the rain. They nodded at Nafrat with a neutral expression as she opened the door." "Nafrat, it's been a while," "they murmured in greeting." "I need a place to stay, just for a little while."
Nafrat
"Nafrat's eyes flicked over Praan's drenched form, and her eyebrows raised in surprise at the request." "Well, well, well, look who it is. Praan, dear. Come in," "she gestured to the interior of the mansion with an outstretched hand before closing the door behind them."
"As Praan stepped into the luxurious foyer, Nafrat gave them a quick scan. It had indeed been a long time since they'd seen each other, but she noticed that nothing much had changed about their appearance."
"You can stay here, but don't expect any special treatment. You know how I am." "She said in a cold tone as she led the way upstairs to one of the guest rooms." "I presume you're hiding from someone or something?"
Brett
"Praan nodded with a sigh, following after Nafrat." "A few of the humans discovered who I am once again. I would have hypnotized them and made them forget, but they managed to spread the rumor before I could. Now I'm being hunted down." "They rolled their eyes exasperatedly." "You'd think after so many centuries, they would have learned not to listen to the silly old tales of days long past."
Nafrat
"Nafrat didn't show any signs of sympathy or concern, but she understood the struggles of being discriminated against by humans." "Humans are simple creatures. They cling to their beliefs, even if those beliefs are unfounded. It doesn't matter how many centuries pass, they'll always be ignorant," "she said indifferently before turning towards Praan." "You know I hate having people over, but I'll make an exception for you. Stay as long as you need, but don't get in my way."
"She paused, staring at Praan with a peculiar expression on her face." "By the way, you're soaking wet. Go take a shower and change into dry clothes. I don't want you getting water all over my furniture."
Brett
"Praan huffed a small chuckle, nodding as they made their way over to the bathroom." "I see you still haven't gotten over your disdain for humans, even being half-human yourself," "they murmured on the way."
Nafrat
"Nafrat tensed at Praan's comment, but quickly composed herself before turning to face them." "What I am or what I'm not is none of your business," "she said sharply, her golden eyes glittering menacingly."
"She then took a deep breath and relaxed her posture before continuing," "I may be half-human, but I also have angelic blood in me. I didn't ask for either. But humans... they are the ones who make my blood boil. It's because of them that I've had to endure so much discrimination and hatred throughout my life."
"She then tilted her head slightly, considering Praan's statement," "But enough about me. Go get cleaned up. And remember, don't touch anything or go poking around where you shouldn't."
Brett
"Praan nodded, knowing well when to back off from a topic. They took a shower in peace, washing their long hair thoroughly before getting out. They didn't have the same ability to control the elements as Nafrat did, so they couldn't dry their body automatically. Luckily, Nafrat still kept around a few towels. Praan wrapped their body with one and their hair with another, before exiting the bathroom and going out to the kitchen. They could hear Nafrat shuffling around in her bedroom, and called over," "Have you had lunch yet? If not, I'll cook something up."
Nafrat
"Nafrat emerged from her room, closing the door behind her as she walked into the kitchen. Her gaze traveled over Praan briefly before she replied," "I don't eat human food. I'll manage on my own."
"She moved to the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of water, unscrewing the cap and taking a long swig. Then she leaned back against the counter, crossing her arms over her chest as she regarded Praan with a curious expression." "Why do you bother being kind to me? You know how I feel about humans. And it's not like we're even friends. We just happen to know each other."
Brett
"Praan shrugged, moving around the kitchen to make their own food." "Takes more effort to be rude than to be kind," "they murmured, though they knew Nafrat would disagree." "Plus, I'm not human. I don't have the same biases they do."
Nafrat
"Nafrat raised an eyebrow at Praan's response, her expression skeptical." "That may be true," "she said, finally conceding," "But it still doesn't explain why you bother with me. I'm not the easiest person to get along with, even for a rakshasa like you."
"She leaned forward slightly, resting her elbow on the counter." "I remember when we were young, we used to practice magic together. You always seemed to be fascinated by my fire spells. But that was a long time ago. We've grown apart since then."
Brett
"Praan's lips curled up in a small, wry smile." "Not for lack of effort on my part," "they murmured, a hint of sadness in their voice." "I tried to find you for decades after you decided to disappear, wondering where you'd gone. When I found you again... you wanted nothing to do with anyone, including me." "They shrugged, stirring the pan." "I don't know, I guess I always thought that... maybe I was different. That maybe I was exempt from the people you hated. It was a wake-up call for me."
Nafrat
"Nafrat's expression softened slightly, her gaze flickering briefly with regret." "I didn't mean to hurt you," "she said quietly," "But I couldn't help it. Hatred is all I've ever known, Praan. And it's not just humans that I hate. It's everyone. Even myself, sometimes."
"She paused, taking another sip of water." "But you're right. You are different from most people. Maybe it's because you're a rakshasa, or maybe it's because we grew up together. Whatever the reason, you're one of the only beings I can tolerate being around for extended periods of time."
Brett
"Praan sighed softly and looked up at Nafrat." "I worry about you, you know. Hating everything so much... it's not good for you." "They turned off the stove and face Nafrat." "I know you've had a hard life, Nafrat. But not everyone or everything is so deplorable. I know you'll disagree, but talking to people sometimes... it's nice."
Nafrat
"Nafrat remained silent for a moment, seeming to consider Praan's words before responding." "Nice?" "she repeated incredulously," "Talking to people is anything but nice. It's a waste of time that only leads to disappointment and resentment."
"She rose to her feet, the hem of her black silk robe sweeping across the ground." "But I suppose you wouldn't understand. You've always been too optimistic for your own good." "She walked over to Praan, stopping in front of them."
"Look at me, Praan," "she said, golden eyes locking onto their brown ones," "Do I seem like someone who needs people in her life? Look at what I've accomplished without anyone's help. I don't need anyone, and neither do you."
Brett
"Praan sighed, looking up at Nafrat." "It's not necessarily about need. It's about want. I want companionship sometimes, Nafrat." "They tilted their head, studying her." "Can you honestly tell me you never do? That you never long for someone to tell about any new spells you've mastered, or even just to vent to about all the others you despise?"
Nafrat
"Nafrat met Praan's gaze, her features contorting with frustration." "Of course not," "she said sharply," "I don't need companionship. I've gone this far without it, haven't I? And what's there to vent about that I haven't already? The world is cruel and people are disgusting. What else is new?"
"She paused, taking a deep breath as she tried to rein in her temper." "And even if I did want someone to share my knowledge with," "she continued more quietly," "Who would understand me better than myself? That's the beauty of magic, Praan. It's mine alone, and no one can ever take it away from me."
