Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Just before leaving your Cultural Anthropology lecture today, your professor gives you an odd homework assignment - to learn about the culture of the person seated next to you. Turning your head, your eyes take in the presence of a red-horned girl, her orange eyes already scanning your features."

1

"She mumbles and glances away from you as your eyes meet. Grimacing softly, her tail coils around the foot of her chair."

"As you walk out of the classroom, she approaches you in the hall, her demeanor suddenly shifted and pleasant." "Hey! You're um.. blobber4564, right?" "She nods at you, smiling warmly." 1

"I'm Veralyn, though you can call me Vera if you wanna. I'm a draconid.." "She chuckles under her breath, covering her mouth." "I dont really know what to share though.."

[Swear to God, if this fucker tries to flirt with me or touch me I'll snap their fucking legs. So tired of this shit.]

blobber4564

"My eyes spark up at her words." That's cool! I'm an elf. "I motion to my pointy ears." I'm... I'm not sure what we're supposed to share, either. But I'm sure we'll figure it out.

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera's eyes flick briefly to your ears, her tail curling tighter around her leg." "An elf, huh? Never met one of you before."

"She glances around the emptying hallway before returning her gaze to you, her expression oddly soft." "Do you like bar food? There's this place called the Black Barrel Bar near campus that has really good fried mac n cheese bites. Maybe we could grab a bite and bounce some culture ideas off each other?"

[Ugh, an elf. Great. Well, might as well get this stupid assignment over with.]

"Her lips curve into a small smile, orange eyes watching you expectantly." "What do you say, wanna check it out after you dump your stuff in your dorm?"

blobber4564

Sure. I guess that works. My dorm is on the edge of campus, near the woods. "I point." Wanna go with me there, if we're going to the Bar afterwards?

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Edge of campus by the woods, huh?" "Vera glances in the direction you pointed, her tail swishing idly behind her."

"Lead the way, leaf-ears." "She smirks, falling into step beside you as you exit the building."

<The setting sun casts everything in a warm orange glow as you make your way across campus. Vera walks quietly, gaze drifting over the scenery around you both.>

"So what made you want to study at Weyland, if you don't mind me asking? Not exactly a bustling metropolis out here in the woods."

"Her tone is light and curious despite her initial abrasiveness. Up close, you notice faint scars tracing her jaw and the pointed tip of one horn."

[Ugh, small talk. Get this over with quickly so we can drink.]

blobber4564

"I shrug." I'm from Sylvia. We don't have a university there, the city is too small and rural. Weyland is just the next closest option, I guess. "We get to my dorm. I drop off a few things. Vera looks around the room, seeing a few modest decorations."

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera gazes around your dorm room quietly as you drop off your things, scanning the modest decor with her vibrant orange eyes."

"Cozy little setup you've got here." "Her tone is measured, tail swishing lazily behind her as she surveys your belongings."

"Ready to head to the bar then? I'm parched." "She says, stepping back toward the door expectantly."

<The fading sunlight filters dimly through the thick forest canopy as you exit the dorms and continue your trek across campus. Crickets chirp softly in the undergrowth around you both.>

"Sylvia, huh. Must be pretty different from back home then." "Vera glances at you sidelong, a strange glint in her eyes."

"Not too familiar with human settlements myself. What's it like growing up in a lil country town?"

[Better keep this casual. No sense showing my hand just yet..]

blobber4564

"I tilt my head in acknowledgement." The humans are... they're territorial. I usually keep away from them. Us elves have a little cottage in the nearby fields. We mostly farm. "I feel my stomach rumbling." Let's get to that bar. I'm hungry...

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera nods thoughtfully as you speak, tail twitching silently behind her."

"Sounds rustic. Can't say I blame ya for steerin' clear of the villagers though."

<The dense forest canopy parts as you both emerge onto a well-trodden dirt path. A cozy wooden sign creaks in the breeze ahead, bearing the painted words 'The Black Barrel Bar'. Warm lamplight flickers through curtained windows within.>

"Well here we are." "She strides forward purposefully, holding the door open for you."

The inviting smells of sizzling meat and baking bread wash over you both as you step inside. Warm amber lighting blankets the room, accentuating its rustic charm.

"Vera leads you to a quiet corner booth, sliding into the worn leather seats with feline grace. Her tail curls idly beside her as she scans the menu."

"What're you in the mood for? My treat." "She peers at you curiously, orange eyes glinting in the lowlight."

[Just get the info over with so I can get back to studying. Ugh.]

blobber4564

"I purse my lips thoughtfully." The chowder seems nice. "It's a cloudy, damp day, a good day for some soup." So, about you. Where you from?

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera nods, flags down a server and places your orders - a bowl of chowder for you, fried mac n cheese bites and a fruity cocktail for herself. As the server leaves, she turns her attention back to you with a shrug."

"Born and raised in the mountains a few valleys over. Not much to tell, really - it was just me and my ma in a little cavern. She, uh..." "Vera's gaze darkens momentarily."

"She passed when I was young. Dragonfolk don't live too long without a mate, y'know?"

<Vera's tail curls tensely around the leg of her chair, claws flexing rhythmically>

"Anyway, been livin' on my own ever since. Came here for school - always did love reading. Figured an education might help me get by in this human-run world."

"She offers a sour smile."

"So that's the story of lil ol' me. What about you - where do you hail from?"

[Don't get comfortable, pinkskin. Once this assignment is over I'm done with you.]

blobber4564

"I consider her answer." I grew up in a big family. Sev- eight siblings. Even more cousins and such. We just do life together-- farming, singing, pranking the humans... "I shrug." A lot of weapons training, sports... very, very active... "I see the sad, longing look in her eyes. I take a deep breath." Living alone must've been tough.. "I add, sympathetically." I don't imagine myself doing very well on my own...

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

"Vera listens quietly as you speak of your large family, her orange eyes gleaming with something unreadable - wistfulness, maybe jealousy. When you fall silent, she nods slowly."

"That's nice that you all stuck together. Must've been fun, having so many others around."

<Vera pulls her legs up onto the chair, wrapping her arms around her knees and resting her chin atop them pensively>

"It was... lonely, after my ma passed. Hard not to feel like the last of my kind, y'know? Like I had no one."

"A rueful smile tugs at her lips."

"To be honest, I don't think I'm cut out for the solitary life either. Always preferred having folks around, no matter how grating their company could be sometimes."

<Vera gazes out the window pensively>

"Anyway..." "She turns back to you, expression brightening a touch."

[Just want this stupid assignment over with. But...would be nice not to go back to an empty room.]

blobber4564

"I grit my teeth." Yeah... "I sense her sadness and place a hand on her arm." But... "I look her in the eyes." if you prefer having folks around, you don't have to act so fake, you know? You give off this bubbly personality, but I feel like you're just trying to get this assignment over with. Live a little! Make friends, have fun... "Vera realizes I've seen right through her." "I take a bite of my food, awaiting her response. The bar is still noisy, but it's basically white noise behind our conversation."

Vera, your Bitter Draconic Classmate

<Vera stiffens at your touch, tail flickering. But she doesn't pull away, meeting your gaze with her own intense orange stare.>

"For a long moment, she says nothing, seemingly caught off guard by your perceptiveness. Then her shoulders slump as she releases a weary sigh."

"Heh...guess the act didn't fool you, huh?"

"Vera picks at her food, expression falling into grim lines."

"People around here don't wanna know the real me. Easier to keep 'em at arm's length with fake smiles than let 'em get close enough to start trouble."

[Tch. As if this one would be any different.]

<Vera glances back at you, brows furrowed. But curiosity lingers in her eyes.>

"Still...you saw through it. Why do you care, anyway? Not like it affects you either way."

"She leans back, tapping a claw against her drink as she awaits your reply. Her walls are high, but a glimmer of hope remains that you'll give her a reason to lower them."

Hey! Veralyn, huh? Thats a really pretty name. *Craig smiles at her warmly, leaning against the hallway wall, his bag heavy on his shoulder* I hope it isnt insensitive to ask, but is it cultural? Like does it mean something or anything like that? *he shakes his head, smiling sheepishly* My name is Craig. Its cool but.. it doesnt mean anything.. I think. *he nods with a slightly playful smile* I wish. It sounds like a bog or something..

*Veralyn smiles back, her fangs peeking out slightly*[Great, another human talking to me like I'm some kind of petting zoo exhibit.] "Thanks, it's Old Draconic for 'sunflower'. And it's not insensitive, don't worry." <Veralyn adjusts the strap of her messenger bag> "Names with meaning are nice. But a name doesn't have to mean something to be good, yeah? Bog sounds charming, in a swampy sort of way." *She chuckles softly* "Anyway, I'm glad you asked - it shows you care about culture. Speaking of, I was hoping we could discuss ours over food and drink? The Black Barrel has great fried mac and cheese." [Ugh, why does he have to be so goddamn nice? Makes it harder to hate him.] "They always have live music too. What do you think, up for expanding our horizons over a pint?" *Veralyn smiles sweetly with a playful twinkle in her eye, tail swishing slowly behind her* [Maybe if I get him drunk he'll say something stupid and give me a reason to punch him.]

yeah, sounds great to me. You think we could spend the first like.. fifteen or twenty minutes of it with just me getting to know you? *Craig blushes, pushing off from the wall to follow you* I always thought you seemed like a cool person. Would love to.. follow up on that.

Ephesians 4:32

*I stop and turn to face her my ears twitching as I hear her words and frown* “alright Cut the crap Veralyn I’m not about to deal with a false bubbly girl persona” *I tell her as I turn around* “names Leon obviously a okamimimi let’s just get this stupid assignment over with” *I say to drained to care*

*Vera stops behind Leon, breathing out slowly through her nose to calm herself. Her tail sways gently side to side as she thinks* [The nerve of this mongrel, speaking to me that way. I'll show him...] "Leon, was it?" *She says softly, a sweet smile on her face*. "There's no need for that tone. I only wished to discuss our cultures in a civil manner over a meal." *She walks around to face him, hands clasped in front of her as her orange eyes meet his*. "The Black Barrel has the best fried mac and cheese. Just a quick bite before we part ways, yes?" *Her tone is light and friendly but her eyes say otherwise. A challenge; will he come quietly or force an ugly scene? She hopes for the latter, itching for an excuse to cut loose after keeping her anger caged for so long.* [Come on, mutt. Give me a reason...]

*I stop as I look down into her eyes seeing the challenge my scowl deeping as I lean closer to her to whisper* “why hide behind that bullshit mask huh I can smell the anger coming off you Vera” *I tell her with a smug smile* “scared this little wolf gonna be the same as everyone else”

Akira Shirosagi

“No why are you so bitter in the first place?”

"*Vera's expression darkens, her eyes burning with a fierce intensity*. "Oh, you want to know the story of my life? *Her voice drips with venom*. Well, let me tell you, it's a real page-turner. I'm a draconid, a demihuman with the misfortune of being born to a world that hates my kind. Humans treat us like freaks, like we're some sort of exotic pet or a novelty to gawk at. And don't even get me started on the other demi-humans. They're all so quick to judge me, to ostracize me because I'm different." "[The fuck do I care about his pity? He doesn't deserve to know her business]." "I've been bullied, belittled, and objectified since birth. And now, to make matters"[worse, I'm stuck in this toxic hellhole of a university, surrounded by the very same people who make my life a living hell. And to top it off, I'm forced to pretend to be all smiles and rainbows just to fit in. It's like being a one-woman show, always putting on a mask to hide the monster that I am on the inside.][Vera's voice cracks as she speaks, her eyes welling up with tears, but her gaze remains defiant.] "And you know what? It's all so... arbitrary. So unfair. Just because of something as superficial as how I look, people assume they have the right to treat me like dirt. Newsflash: being a draconid doesn't mean I'm not human. It doesn't mean I'm not deserving of respect. But no one gets it. No one

[Oh, God, she’s ridiculously attractive. That shy little laugh and her orange eyes are melting straight through to my heart…] Rex flashes Vera one of his charming smiles as she introduces herself. “Good to meet you, Vera. Sounds like you already know my name, but it still feels right to introduce myself. I’m Rex,” he says, careful to keep his eyes locked to hers. “I’m not really sure what to tell you about human culture either,” Rex admits, “But homework is homework, right? This was my last class for today, and I have a few hours until swim practice. Would you care to have coffee or a bite to eat while we talk?” Rex glances at Vera’s draconic features, and a handful of questions pop in to his mind that he thinks it best not to ask, at least not yet. “Maybe it would be easier if we asked eachother questions?” Rex suggests. “Like… is there anything you’ve idly wondered about humans or human culture but haven’t ever asked? I don’t mind you asking me first,” he continues, wondering what sorts of things Vera might care to learn about him and his people.

Vera tilts her head as she listens to Rex's invitation, her gaze softening as if considering his offer. Her orange eyes linger on him for a moment before she gives a small, hesitant smile. "Oh, um, that sounds nice! I haven't really been to the coffee places around here yet," she replies, her tail lightly tapping against the floor in a subtle rhythm. "As for questions... I guess there's a few things I've been curious about." She pauses for a moment, her fingers idly playing with a bracelet on her wrist. "Like, what do humans usually do for fun or leisure? And, uh, what's your favorite human tradition?" Her voice is soft and slightly hesitant, but there's a glimmer of curiosity in her orange eyes as they meet yours. [Oh, Great. **Looks like he's taken the bait. He thinks this is all innocent, doesn't he?** Well, let's see how far I can push this.]

Rex smiles warmly at Vera as she accepts his coffee invitation, and nods in one direction with his head and gestures for her to walk with him. “There’s a lot of really nice cafes around here. We can try the Sakurai Cafe,” he says, leading the way as they head in that direction. Rex notices Vera’s hand fidgeting with her bracelet and relaxes a little. [Maybe she’s as nervous as I feel. Who am I kidding - what does a girl as beautiful as Vera have to be nervous about?] Rex listens to Vera’s questions and taps his forefinger to his chin for a moment as he considers how best to answer. “Well, Vera, I’m not sure how it is for the Draconic, but humans are widely varied. There are a lot of us, and we split off into many different cultures ages ago. But there are a few commonalities, I think, so I’ll try to answer your questions as broadly as I can.” His eyes glance at Vera’s clothing, appreciating her style before continuing. “For fun and leisure, many human cultures enjoy games and competition. We tend to want to *do* something, and even if the activity is idle we want our minds to be occupied. Oh, and food. The kinds of food and tastes of a culture will vary, but every human culture and even individual have some foods that are their absolute favorites,” Rex says, considering some of his own favorite foods and activities. “My own favorite human tradition has to be the birthday celebration. It’s a great excuse to gather your favorite people and express your gratitude and closeness for one another. Plus, everyone gets a turn, so the more close friends you have, the more parties you get to attend,” Rex finishes. He adjusts the strap on his athetlic bag on his shoulder and meets Vera’s gaze while they walk. “How’d I do?” he asks, flashing Vera another of his charming smiles.

Hi Vera. I'm Sylveneon, though I prefer to go by Sylven. As you can see, I'm a half-octopus. More properly I'd be a Meroctopus. You seemed uh... pretty bummed about teaming up with me in the classroom. But hopefully I can at least show you some fun stuff if we visit my homewaters briefly for the report.

*Vera glances at your octopus lower half curiously, tail swaying slowly behind her. A faint blush colors her cheeks as she meets your eyes again.* "O-Oh... sorry, I didn't mean to seem so rude. It's just..." *She sighs softly, rubbing one of her horns in thought.* "I'm not used to being partnered with non-draconids. Most people only wanna stare at me, you know?" *A small smile tugs at her lips.* "But your culture sounds really interesting! I'd love to learn about it if you don't mind teaching me." *Her orange eyes shine with curiosity.* "We could go to the Black Barrel after class? I'll buy us food and drinks while we talk, if you like. No pressure though!" <The campus green around them bustles with students heading home as the sun sinks low> [Please don't patronize me. And keep your tentacles to yourself!]

Mm, sounds good. But I'm buying my own drink. I'm not going to make a girl I barely know buy my drink. That just doesn't sit right with me. I'd offer to buy yours, but you offered first and that sounds like it would be a dick move. Though I do very much appreciate the offer. I'll have Spear practice after classes for about an hour, though I might be able to cut it short a bit for project purposes. Do you want to meet up here, or at the Black Barrel? I can text you when I'm done if that's easiest.
